Paulo Magalhães

Biography

Graduated in Law by the Catholic University and post-graduated in Planning, Urbanism and Environmental Law by the Law Faculty of Coimbra University (Portugal), he also attended the PhD Programme ‘El médio ambiente natural y humano e las ciências sociales’ at Salamanca University (Spain). Today is finnishing his PhD in “Human Ecology” at Universdade Nova de Lisboa, with a thesis“ Common Home of Humanity – Legal Construction based on Science”. In 1984, he was a founding member of QUERCUS – Associação Nacional de Conservação da Natureza, and in 2016 was also founding member of ZERO – Associação Sistema Terrestre Sustentável. As a photographer and environmentalist he was author of several books, that we highlight, the “Earth Condominium: From Climate Change to a New Juridic Concept for the Planet (2007), where proposes a new concept for the management of our Common Home, by using an analogy with the legal model of the Condominium. In his most recent book he was the editor of the SOS TREATY (Safe Operating Space Treaty) a new approach to managing our use of the Earth System, published in 2016 by Cambrigde Scholars Publishers.

Since 2011 has become researcher at CICSNOVA- Universidade Nova de Lisboa. In 2016 he becomes researcher at do CIJE- Centro de Investigação Jurídico-Económica, of the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade do Porto.

He is the chair if the Steering Committee of the Common Home of Humanity.
